8 Ways to Increase Your Happiness Today
Sometimes we’re so busy focusing on our children’s happiness that we forget our own, but as always, I’m here to remind you that you matter too. The good news is that happiness is not only determined by external circumstances; it’s also influenced by our mindset and the choices we make day to day. By incorporating certain habits and practices into our daily lives, we can boost our overall happiness and well-being. Here are eight ways to increase your happiness starting today:
Notice the ‘goods’: Gratitude is a great tool for cultivating happiness. Take a few moments each day to reflect on the things that have been good, the little glimmers, the joys, whether it's the support of loved ones, a giggle with your little one, or even a really good cuppa. Keeping a gratitude journal (or good/glimmer list) can help you feel more positive and over time your brain will naturally start looking for all the good things.
Positive interaction: Parenting can sometimes feel isolating and lonely.. Stay connected with friends, family, and other parents who understand what you're going through. Share your experiences, seek support when needed, and don't hesitate to ask for help. Building a strong support network can provide comfort, validation, and a sense of belonging, ultimately boosting your happiness.
Moments of Self-Care: As parents, we can tend to put our children's needs before our own. However, neglecting self-care can lead to burnout and overwhelm. We get frustrated more easily and our capacity to cope is reduced. So make self-care a priority, carving out moments for yourself will replenish your energy and improve your mood. It won’t always look perfect, maybe it’s a relaxed latte while baby is napping or a dance around the kitchen together, but something is better than nothing.
Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment without judgment. taking mindful pauses during the day to breathe and ground yourself can be really useful. Observing your surroundings while you walk or listening to a mindfulness track can help reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and enhance your overall sense of well-being. Remember Your Passions: Don't lose sight of the things that bring you joy and fulfillment outside of parenthood. Make time to remember and pursue your hobbies, interests, and passions, even if it's just for a few minutes each day. Whether it's painting, gardening, reading or playing an instrument, Finding time for activities like these help you to remember who you are and it’s a great way to be a positive role model to your children.
Practice Acts of Kindness: The magic of kindness is that, whether big or small, it has the power to uplift both the giver and the receiver. Look for opportunities to spread kindness and generosity wherever you go, whether it's offering a helping hand to a new mum in need, volunteering in your community, or simply smiling at a stranger.
Focus on What You Can Control: Parenthood comes with plenty of unexpected challenges and uncertainties, which can leave us feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Instead of dwelling on things beyond your control, move your focus to what you can influence. Break down larger tasks into manageable steps, celebrate small victories, and practice self-compassion during setbacks. Shifting your focus to what you can control helps you to navigate parenthood with greater resilience and optimism.
Mindful consumption: This involves being intentional about what you allow into your life, whether it's the news you consume, who you follow on insta, the food you eat, or the people you hang out with. Pay attention to how certain inputs affect your mood and well-being, and make choices that support your happiness and values. Limit exposure to negative news or social media content that brings you down, and instead, seek out sources of inspiration, fun, education and positivity.
